Project MAG Trio marks the start of Giuseppe Magagnino’s professional career as a soloist. The project had its early start in 2018 and was kept in wait so it could reach its proper artistic dimension, sound concreteness and formation, in order to fully express itself.
It was during the first lockdown in 2020, due to the Covid pandemic, that Giuseppe was able to clearly define the concept of his record and, shortly afterwards, carry out his project, which puts together compositions produced over the years 2020/2021 and others written between 2017 and 2019.
All started with “My inner child”, a composition born during the period of the suspension of concerts. It is a journey back in time, into the author’s childhood. It triggered some deep and personal reflections on the playful approach to music and the musical instrument, which is often lost when professional activity starts and curiosity, impulse and enthusiasm fade away a bit, under the weight of expectations and tensions.
“My inner child” is an invitation to come into contact more often, even in adult age, with the child still living inside every one of us.
In his first work as a soloist, the Salentino pianist explores the potentialities of the piano trio. He also includes short essays of piano solo, trying to pour into the writing and the performance all his inner self and the experience of studying and listening to the great pianists who, over the last 65 years, have been a reference for him and the new generations of musicians and jazz enthusiasts.
All compositions included in the record tell about the author’s life. Each was written in one go, spontaneously. Giuseppe chose not to revise or refine too much his writing, so that authenticity might be preserved. Just like children do.
In Giuseppe’s style, hints of the Afro-American jazz tradition combine with the sound and arrangements typical of north European jazz and with a strong melodic component, characteristic of the great Italian music.
The other members of the trio are Luca Alemanno, double-bass, and Karl-Henrik Ousbäck at the drums. Both are high-level musicians, besides being friends, and they perfectly interpreted the artist’s feeling, and the requested characteristics of sound and musical language.

Con il progetto "MAG Trio" nasce il percorso da solista del pianista jazz Giuseppe Magagnino, un progetto che ha mosso i primi passi nel 2018 e che ha aspettato di avere la giusta dimensione artistica e concretezza di suono e formazione per potersi esprimere pienamente.
È stato grazie al primo lockdown del 2020 che Giuseppe ha potuto delineare in maniera chiara il Concept del suo lavoro discografico e realizzare da lì a poco il progetto mettendo insieme composizioni nate nel 2020/2021 e brani scritti tra il 2017 e il 2019.
Tutto ha preso forma con “My inner child”, una composizione nata durante la pausa dall’attività concertistica, un viaggio dell’autore indietro nel tempo, nella sua infanzia; un momento che lo ha portato a intime riflessioni sull’approccio giocoso alla musica e allo strumento che tende un po’ a perdersi con l’inizio dell’attività professionistica quando le aspettative e le tensioni “sporcano” curiosità, slancio ed entusiasmo tipici delle prime esperienze.
“My inner child” è un invito a contattare più spesso, anche in età adulta, il nostro bambino interiore.
In questo primo lavoro da solista il pianista salentino esplora le potenzialità del piano trio e lascia spazio a piccoli assaggi in piano solo cercando di riversare nella scrittura e nelle esecuzioni tutto se stesso e l’esperienza di ascolto e studio dei grandi pianisti che negli ultimi 65 anni sono stati un riferimento per lui e per le nuove generazioni di musicisti ed appassionati di jazz.
Tutte le composizioni presenti nel disco raccontano la sua vita.
Sono nate di getto, in maniera spontanea, e Giuseppe ha scelto di non intervenire con troppo lavoro di affinamento e scrittura, rispettandone l’autenticità. Proprio come i bambini sanno fare.
Nello stile di Giuseppe si trovano tracce della tradizione jazz afroamericana integrate con suono ed arrangiamenti tipici del jazz nord europeo e con una forte componente melodica caratteristica della grande musica italiana.
Il trio è composto da Luca Alemanno al contrabbasso e Karl-Henrik Ousback alla batteria. Due musicisti di grande livello, due amici, che hanno incarnato egregiamente la sensibilità e le caratteristiche sonore e di linguaggio ricercate dall’artista.
